CAD begins probe into MLM firm Sunshine Empire
By Lorna Tan
THE Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) has begun investigation into the affairs of Sunshine Empire following reports of its controversial business practices.

A police statement on Tuesday, advising those who have invested in the company to wait for further updates from CAD, said they may be asked to help in the probe.

Barely 16 months into operations here, Sunshine was placed on the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS’) investor alert list in September.

This list names people or firms who may be conducting activities regulated by the MAS without authority.

On Oct 24, The Straits Times reported that the multi-level marketing firm had come under scrutiny because it appeared to be operating like a pure investment scheme, something it did not have the licence to do.

MAS has warned people against making investments with unregulated firms and individuals. And a new consumer alert has been issued to inform consumers about get-rich schemes that sound too good to be true.

Based at Toa Payoh HDB Hub, Sunshine has attracted 20,000 people here since it was set up last July.

The man behind Sunshine is Mr James Phang, 48, the founder, director and international president of Empire Group Alliance, a group spanning several Asian countries. Sunshine is part of the group, but Mr Phang does not own it.

MLM firms, which are legal here, typically invite people to pay cash for the right to market goods to other people. They also get cash for recruiting other MLM marketers.

Under Sunshine’s scheme, people usually put down $12,000 to become a ‘merchant’, as it calls users of its online shopping platform offering thousands of goods, including health supplements, lingerie and electronics goods.

After signing up, they can buy Sunshine’s online goods. But they are also rewarded with potentially hefty cash rebates, though these are not guaranteed. Merchants can build their own sales force as well.

The scheme is structured in such a way that participants are not required to use the rebates to buy Sunshine’s goods.

The cash rebates are based on Sunshine’s global turnover. The option of converting the rebates into cash only makes Sunshine more attractive than other MLM firms where people must maintain sales quotas.

Sunshine also operates in Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan, and has 50,000 merchants. It plans to expand to the United States by next year.

According to its marketing brochure, Sunshine projects global monthly turnover of US$100 million (S$146 million) for December.

  5. Stanley Says:

the most du lan thing is their pak-jiao founder boasting that he is better than Warren Buffet (Warren Buffet is my investment guru leh) and his loyal participants calling out “Father I love you” (like cult rite?)…lol….20,000 suckers sucked into worshipping a delusional nutcase at Toa Payoh…haha…

  6. JT Says:

    LOL!

  7. Avenger Says:

Hey thank GOD you nv join SE, did you left a comment in my blog??

    http://www.exposingse.blogspot.com

    I trapped in se…….

Well se is a company based on using people’s greed and getting them to invest, after these people suddenly wake up and tries to leave the uplines will brainwash them into staying, and all those clean and good people that goes into sunshine will turn bad and greedy and still feel that they are doing the right thing.

They will use tactic like counting out ur expenses and physcoing u into thinking that 8-5 job cannot survive etc. but people with business mind will noe actually that its not the 8-5 job thing it is how u handle ur money but normal people can nv outtalk a manager or presenter from sunshine.

Then when u not so active the upline will call and call using their emcall sevice lolx and they will want u to stay.

haha tell u something. se people actually believe that in march CAD will release them and they will be legal. They keep saying things like CAD no evidence and if CAD got evidence se confirm cannot function already but ermm…..haha their activities are all overseas now , se office in singapore is an empty shell le, they just use to present to those new people but when they buy their primes its all overseas.

SE will bring their ativities overseas into the 10countries.

Even if singapore cannot do they will bring their greed to other countries and when last time CAD nv check they say things like singapore so big how come cannot pull people in to their downlines and when CAD check they say singapore so small even the word singapore is bigger than singapore go other countries lah……how pathetic……

  8. Hanson Says:

SE sounds like a scam to me. They are using legal loop holes such as if they
ask for investors money $$$, and give goods & services back to investors, then this
is considered as business dispute, and not SCAM. James Phang really understand the
    legal loop hole.

In proper business it is really difficult to obtain such high return, unless the
property developed by SE is earning at least 3 to 10 times the initial cost invested to build the property project.

I saw from internet that investors who wish to withdraw will need to pay admin fees
and wait for at least 3 weeks to get back their investment. SCAMmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
If you invest in Unit Trust or Hedge Funds, you can just sell off your stocks
to get back your investment within one day to one week (if price is not too low).

  9. Hanson Says:

The following is some of my additional thoughs of investing in a business.
    Also one thing to notice when you evaluate a business;

    a) If a business is located in a prestige location (expensive office),
then you should know that the rental to operate such business is very
    high, especially in Singapore.

    b) Usually stingy business owners will help to save alot of money
(investors profit) if they operate out from a less expensive address.

    c) Usually if a business expenses is too extravagence, then there will
be less profit left for all the investors.

  10. Anti EmMax Says:
